The impacts of climate change are no longer distant projections but daily realities facing frontline communities across Nigeria and the world, according to environmental advocate and journalist, Etta Michael Bisong.

From flooding and extreme weather to food insecurity, displacement, and damage to infrastructure, Bisong said the situation underscores the urgent need for intentional climate governance that would enable Nigeria to innovate, build resilience, and create a sustainable pathway for future generations.

He noted that true climate action can only be achieved through effective governance, stressing that environmentalists must step into politics to advance their advocacy.

Bisong made the remarks in Abuja on September 5, shortly after being received into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), where he pledged to use political engagement as a tool to strengthen climate change governance.

Explaining his decision, Bisong said he recognized the connection between real development and political power. He called on other environmental activists to join the political process to help assure a sustainable future for Nigerians, Africa, and the global community.

He expressed gratitude to Citizen Greg Odogwu, national coordinator of the APC Climate Change Network (ACCN), for facilitating his entry into the party, and to the APC Wuse Ward executives for their support.

In his remarks, Odogwu, who has been a member of the APC since 2014, described Bisong’s membership as a boost for environmental governance. He said Bisong’s 17 years of experience in journalism and climate advocacy would help the party attract more green votes ahead of the 2027 elections and beyond.

Ayuba Idi, chairman of Wuse Ward, also commended Bisong for joining the APC, describing the party as a community open to anyone aspiring to transform the country through good governance.

He urged members to uphold loyalty to the party’s constitution and avoid anti-party activities, noting that the APC’s principles remain supreme over individual interests.
